UPDATE: Ikhwili and Siyazahka Schools Library Project

Greetings,

Steve and I have been ably assisted by Carol and Bob Dombroski of The Madison Breakfast Rotary Group and the founders of the Madison Rotary Book project for the past two weeks.

The two rooms allocated to the library are slowly being transformed into a wonderful resource room and reading room adjoining each other. The builder did a great job of knocking down an opening and replastering the wall so the two rooms are connected. Steve and Bob have completed building the shelves, a center carousel, and came up with an ingenious way of recycling old school desks into benches for the reading rooms table to accommodate the 50 plus children per class.

Carol and I have been sorting through old text books and opening up the boxes of books we received from Rotary Books of the World- it's like Christmas in October. Books are being unpacked and sorted with willing and curious students always ready to lend a hand. We always have some company - during school hours; it is the kids and after school hours and on weekends the goats, pigs, chickens, dogs and Nguni cattle pop in to see our progress and entertain us. The wind has been blowing non-stop at the school and we sure do feel wind-swept and dusty by the end of the day.

A wonderful moment was had with the kids after school was out on Friday, and invited some who were playing with their friends to join us reading some books with us and they just loved it. They were so excited to see dinosaurs and hear the "clever children" read to them.

The center piece of the carousel is a large branch of driftwood found on the beach, which we have dubbed the "Learning Tree." The students will be decorating the tree with shells and their traced hands on paper telling their story of why the gift of literacy is important to them.

We have also purchased some crayons and stationery to assist in the library and laminated some worksheets and posters. Six large reading tables are being made to seat ten students at a table.

A celebration is planned at the end of the end of the week with the community involved and to thank Carol and Bob for their invaluable assistance.

We all feel excited about the accomplishment of the library project knowing that it will be benefitting many children and providing them with the "Gift of Literacy" to empower them toward a better lifestyle.

We thank you too for your huge part in this worthwhile project.

Warm regards

Michelle, Steve, Carol and Bob
