On a hill overlooking the Indian Ocean in the rural Eastern Cape region of South Africa is small hamlet called Cwili and the adjoing town of Kei Mouth. The advances of the new, post-apartheid South Africa have not quite reached this area; the town is still segregated, not by law, but by culture, history, and circumstance. In spite of not being well, Ingrid is a strong and dedicated woman
who finds the energy and love to reach out to disadvantaged and vulnerable
children. In her words:
“I understand these children, having grown up myself as an orphan
caring for younger siblings. I also have experienced the stigma attached
to having HIV and cancer. Many times I faced death, and I promised
God that if I survived, I would make a difference to the lives of
